Bright Prospects for Global Poultry Industry

The global poultry industry is looking forward to bright prospects according to a new report from Rabobank.

The report ‘Crossroads for Growth: The International Poultry sector towards 2020’ says that the outlook is hopeful despite the current turbulent environment and the challenge of meeting a 30 per cent rise in global demand in the next decade.

It says that players from Brazil and other emerging markets have started to become more international and to diversify the global poultry industry as markets in Europe and the US become saturated.

The result is a changed competitive environment, with new players entering new markets and equity players taking up positions in the industry hoping to benefit from the opportunities.

August was another outstanding month for US pork and beef exports, according to the latest statistics released by USDA and compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

Pork exports reached their highest monthly volume of the year at 186,068 metric tons, and the second-highest value total of all time at $531.2 million. Beef exports set an all-time monthly value record at $514.2 million on a strong volume of 116,405 metric tonnes. Both pork and beef exports are on pace to set new value records in 2011 and to eclipse the $5 billion mark for the first time ever.

In China, a scandal over the mislabelling of pork as organic at the supermarket chain Wal Mart has seen the resignation of the Chinese CEO, Ed Chan.

The company, which recently celebrated its 15th anniversary in China, closed more than a dozen stores in central China last week following allegations they sold regular pork as organic pork over the past two years.
