Global Salmon Prices Stutter As Supply Picks Up Although global salmon prices have been on a rising trend over the past few years, as production in Chile starts to recover, global prices are beginning to fluctuate. Chilean salmon exports rose by 30 per cent in volume in the first quarter of 2011 and over 50 per cent compared to a year earlier. The increased supply in salmon has led to some price decline, particularly during the June to July period. However, speculators do not see Chile returning strongly to the world markets before 2012. Fish production in Mexico has increased, following stricter seasonal closures. The federal agency, Conapesca said that the positive effects of temporary fishing restrictions have been reflected in increased production of squid, croaker, chiral, hedgehog, lobster, abalone, clams, oysters and shrimp. Italy has failed to comply with EU legislation. There is continued illegal use of drift-nets in the Mediterranean, following a Court of Justice ruling in 2009. Despite persistent calls on Italy to fulfil its monitoring and enforcement tasks adequately with regard to illegal drift-nets, recent on-site inspections did not show any significant improvements as compared to the situation before the Court's judgement. It is likely that the European Commission will refer the case to the Court of Justice again, this time asking the Court to impose significant financial penalties on Italy in accordance with the Treaty rules. |
