New Trade Dispute Looms as One is Resolved

World Trade Organization (WTO) members meeting as the Dispute Settlement Body (DSB) have adopted the dispute panel report examining anti-dumping measures imposed by the US on certain frozen warmwater shrimp from Viet Nam and the use of 'zeroing', a technique for calculating the extent of dumping.

The DSB adopted the Panel report that examined anti-dumping measures imposed by the US on certain frozen warm water shrimp from Viet Nam and the use of zeroing.

The Panel report was published on 5 July and according to Article 16.4 of the Dispute Settlement Understanding (DSU), this report shall be considered by the DSB for adoption within 60 days after the date of publication, unless one of the parties informs the DSB of its decision to appeal.

Now, the Seafood Exporters Association of India (SEAI) has demanded that the Government take the US to the WTO over continued zeroing in on Indian shrimp exports, which are battered by anti-dumping duty imposed by the US, it alleges.

Continuing on trade, figures from the Norwegian Seafood Export Council reveal that in August, exports of salmon were down 13 per cent for the same period last year, while volume was up 10,000 tonnes.

So far this year, exports of salmon are NOK19.4 billion. This is an increase of two per cent, or NOK389 million from the same period last year. However, exports have fallen in value for the third consecutive month. The reason for this is the fall in demand for fresh salmon as well as the international competition in the salmon market, particularly from Chile.
